This is a Chicago-Style deep dish pizza, meaning the toppings are layered "upside down", creating a buttery, crispy crust. You start off with a buttered cast iron pan and the pizza dough. The first layer on the dough is the cheese, then the meat, then the sauce and then the finishing touches: garlic, oregano, parmesan and a generous drizzle of olive oil!
Ingredients:
- 1 pound prepared pizza dough.
- 1 T. extra virgin olive oil
- 1 pound Grassfed Goodness Ground Pork
- Italian seasoning (recipe below)
- 2 T. softened butter
- 10 oz. shredded mozzarella and/or cheddar cheese
- 1 cup thick marinara or pizza sauce
- 3 cloves minced garlic
- 1 T. dried oregano
- 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 T. extra virgin olive oil
-
- Italian Seasoning Ingredients:
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. dried basil
- 1 tsp. dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. crushed fennel seeds
- 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 T. red wine vinegar
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
- Place the ground pork in the skillet along with the Italian seasoning ingredients and cook the pork until it is brown and now longer pink, chopping it up as it cooks.
- Grease the inside of a 12-inch cast iron skillet with the butter. Place the pizza dough in the center and spread evenly towards the bottom edge and 1 1/2 inches up the sides.
- Then layer the toppings in this order to achieve a crisp crust: Cheese first, then the sausage, then the marinara sauce.
- Sprinkle the minced garlic, oregano and parmesan cheese over the marinara sauce.
- Finish by drizzling with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
- Place the skillet in the preheated oven on the bottom rack. Cook until the edge of the crust is golden brown and crusty, 30-35 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Enjoy!
